iTunes

iTunes is a digital media player from Apple that can help organize and play music or video files. This application is a requirement platform for managing iPod and iPhone – popular digital media player devices from Apple. iTunes was initially introduced in the year 2001 at San Francisco’s Macworld Expo.

iTunes has the ability to automatically access iTunes store via Internet which offers purchase of music, movies and Apple applications for download.

History

In the year 2000 Apple purchased SoundJam MP from its developer Jeff Robin and Bill Kincaid, which became the foundation of iTunes’ concept.

Only Mac OS-09 has the ability to run the initial version of iTunes before it was shortly followed by version 2 that can run in Mac OS X and provide platform for iPod.

In the year 2003 version 4.0 of iTunes started to offer the iTunes Store. Version 4.0 was followed by iTunes version 4.1, which supports installation on Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating systems.

It was in 2005 when the video feature of iTunes was primarily introduced through version 4.8. ITunes employed the drag and drop system to transfer movies to the iTunes library.

Version 7.0 of iTunes was released in the year 2006, which initiated Cover Flow and gapless playback. In the same year iTunes store reached up to 550 TV shows for purchase download including some Disney-owned movies.

In the year 2007 Apple released another version of iTunes to accommodate the new operating system from Windows – the Windows Vista.

The most updated version of iTunes is version 8 which was introduced to the public in the year 2008. This version of iTunes is packaged with fresh installation of graphic visualizer, grid view, and Genius playlists.

From iPod to iTunes

One of the problems in using iTunes is its inability to copy music from iPod. When an iPod is initially synced to an iTunes, it is set to automatically erase the iPod’s library and fill it with the current desktop’s music library. There is a way to avoid this and copy your music files from your iPod.

Connect your iPod on your computer. Select the “No” option when prompted to auto-sync your iPod to your iTunes. This will prevent your iPod’s music from being wiped out.

Exit iTunes. Your iPod will still be recognized by your computer as an external device. Open the iTunes directory that is usually located in your Windows My Music folder. Delete ITL and XML files inside the iTunes directory.

It is important to initially configure folder options to show hidden folders. Go to “My Computer” then click on your iPod connection. Search for the iPod control folder, which will only show if you configured your folder options as instructed. iPod control folder contains music files that are named differently in this folder. Duplicate this folder by saving a copy in your computer.

Open iTunes and set its configurations to manage and copy additional files in the iTunes library. After the configuration add your copied files to the iTunes library.
